Abstract
Through the example of Bernhard Epassi, a teenager from Cameroon hired to perform in the 1896 "First German Colonial Exhibition" in Berlin, this article examines the ambiguous and tenuous positions occupied by blacks in turn-of-the-century Germany. It traces the ways the exhibition both reinforced and undermined colonialist visions of Germany's place in the wider world and also examines Epassi's ultimately unsuccessful efforts to secure a place for himself in German society.
