Abstract

Der Kölner Stadtdialekt, »Kölsch«, der nicht nur in der Stadt selbst, sondern auch in der näheren Umgebung gesprochen wird, ist sehr viel mehr als nur Mittel zur sprachlichen Kommunikation. Er wird häufig mit örtlichen kulturellen Ereignissen und Veranstaltungen assoziiert, wie zum Beispielmit Karneval, Theateraufführungen, Fußball- und Eishockeyspielen, und stellt somit ein typisches Beispiel für eine Instrumentalisierung von lokaler Sprache dar, für eine symbolische oder emblematische Verwendung bekannter, teilweise klischeehafter Sprüche, die die Zugehörigkeit zurStadt und zu ihren Traditionen signalisiert (Agha 2003; Reershemius 2011; Horan 2016). In diesem Aufsatz werden die Rolle und Funktion des Kölschen unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der diskursiven Konstruktion des Dialektes in der Öffentlichkeit behandelt. Anhand von Liedtexten und Zeitungsartikeln wird aufgezeigt, wie der Dialekt nicht nur als Erstsprache, sondern auch als Zweitsprache für Einheimische und Neuankömmlinge dargestellt wird. Kölsch wird definiert, kodifiziert, als eigenständige Sprache beschrieben und zugleich auch als Ware und Freizeittätigkeit angeboten (Straßner 1986). Die sprachlichen Eigenheiten des Kölschen werden heute somit deutlich anders präsentiert und rezipiert als noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten. // »Kölsch«, the dialect spoken in the city of Cologne and the surrounding area, is much more than a language variety. It has close associations with cultural events taking place in the city, including Lentern carnival celebrations, theatre performances, football and ice-hockey matches, and provides a typical example of the instrumentalisation of a local language variety, one which draws on the symbolic or emblematic use of well-known, at times clichéd phrases to signal identification with the city and its traditions (Agha 2003: Reershemius 2011: Horan 2016). This article explores the role and function of the Cologne dialect with a particular focus on its discursive construction in public discourse. An analysis of selected song lyrics and newspaper articles reveals that Kölsch is characterised as both a first and second language for natives and recent arrivals to the city alike. The dialect is defined and codified as a language, but one that is now also a commodity and an object of interest as a hobby or leisure activity (Straßner 1986). As such, there has been a marked shift in the portrayal and reception of Kölsch compared with previous decades.
