Abstract

Ankle replacement surgery is an established surgical treatment in the management of end-stage ankle arthritis. This thesis explores the outcomes of ankle replacement surgery including complication rates, clinical scores, patient reported outcome measures, radiological measurements, and revision rates. Qualitative methods have been used to look at current perspectives of ankle replacement from a patient and surgeon point of view in particular focusing on decision-making Data linkage studies were undertaken. All of the ankle replacements on the National Joint Registry database were linked to the Hospital Episode Statistics database to look for episodes that occurred after the index operation in particular to identify rates of reoperation and pulmonary embolism following ankle replacement.
