Abstract
The signatures ('x made me') of Archaic and Classical artists on vases, monuments and sculpture are found in both imperfective and perfective verbal forms (imperfect, aorist). The semantic/functional reasons for this variation have not been satisfactorily explained. Some basic considerations of the role of aspect in ancient Greek, and the correlation between perfectivity, agentivity and foregrounding, suggest that the Greek imperfect was used when the saliency of the action or the agency of the actor was to be reduced.
