Abstract
This report describes the evaluation of Project 1 of the Assessment is for Learning Development Programme: Support for Professional Practice in Formative Assessment which is part of the Future Learning and Teaching (FLaT) programme. The aim of the project is to investigate effective classroom approaches to formative assessment and produce guidance for schools and teachers about assessment policies and practice to raise attainment. The project involves four groups of eight or nine schools working together, supported by one development officer and staff from two university faculties. Each education authority in Scotland nominated one project school and one matched comparator school. A team from King‟s College London supported the project which started in May 2002. From August 2002 the plans were implemented with progress and case studies being reported in March 2003. The project was based on a review of the literature on assessment undertaken by Black and Wiliam (1998). They describe assessment as „all those activities undertaken by teachers, and by their students in assessing themselves, which provide information to be used as feedback to modify the teaching and learning activities in which they are engaged. Such assessment becomes „formative assessment‟ when the evidence is used to adapt the teaching work to meet the needs.‟ (p. 2)
