Abstract

During the 1990s, there was an explosion of interest in researching issues relating to practice. This was partly to increase understanding of the role of practice in the development of expertise, but also to provide guidance to aspiring musicians as to how to ensure that their practice was optimally effective. Harald Jorgensen played a pivotal role in these endeavours, organizing the first International Conference of Research on Instrumental Practice in Olso in August 1996 and subsequently editing, with Andreas Lehman, the book ‘Does Practice Make Perfect? Current Theory and Research on Instrumental Music Practice.’ This book has been influential in generating further interest in the field and setting an agenda for subsequent research. In that book, I reviewed the literature on practice and developed a model to provide a framework for describing how the various factors affecting practice might interact together. In this chapter, I consider what we know about performance anxiety and propose that as part of their training, young musicians should receive guidance as to how to develop strategies to enable them to optimise their performance which will serve them throughout their careers
