Abstract
This chapter begins by briefly considering the development of research ethics and its regulation, then outlines three main frameworks or approaches to thinking about ethics: principles, outcomes and rights. Some limitations and criticisms of research ethics are summarised, followed by sections on why research ethics matter, and on applying to an ethics review committee. The rest of the chapter reviews some of the key questions and processes related to ethics that arise throughout research projects, from first plans onwards. These include harm and benefit, privacy and confidentiality, information and consent. Concern with research ethics began in medicine, but besides healthcare this chapter also relates to research in education, welfare, youth, criminal justice, commercial and many other services and topics that affect children and young people.
