Abstract
In this article, I look at the presence in sixteenth-century chivalric fiction of a theme more commonly found in geographical or philosophical discourses: the contemplation of a map or a globe. Through the analysis of Amadis de Gaula (translation of book VIII, 1548), Ariosto’s Orlando furioso (1532) and a forgotten chivalric romance of the late sixteenth-century, Gerileon d’Angleterre (1586), I show how such episodes can be read both as allegories for the act of reading, and as an attempt to reconcile romance with meditation.
