Abstract
So far, little is known about the communist resistance movement during the Third Reich in Breslau. After the party was proscribed, it was possible to install new local leaders quickly, despite repeated arrests. But to what extent can the communist underground in Breslau be regarded to be genuine resistance? There is reason to believe that the party’s Silesian district leadership was controlled by the Gestapo – at least in part and to an increasing extent. This article discusses the role of three communists who were recruited by the Gestapo as informants. It scrutinises how they gained increasing influence in the process of reorganising communist groups and how they helped to destroy them. The article also deals with the different fates of these informants after 1945.
