Abstract
This paper reports on a mapping study of dissertation supervision across distance Masters' courses in the University of London. The study suggests that even within the University of London, there is a wide diversity in terms of the requirements for the dissertation in terms of length and scope. The findings also suggest that in terms of the dissertation process, the course or programme leader plays a key role in dissertation supervision at a distance, taking on a more hands-on approach to provide support for students embarking on the dissertation. The traditional conceptualisation of supervision as operating on the supervisor-supervisee axis needs to be revised to include multiple other actors, resulting in a more complex relationship than normally described.
