Abstract

Although the subversion of conventional parameters of reality through the fantastic is a well-established principle in Borges scholarship, the ways in which the author approached the supernatural as a projection of his own psychological and existential condition has not received the attention it deserves. The picture that emerges from a selection of writings on dreams, nightmares and the supernatural is one of intense emotional anxiety tinged with occasional moments of creative bliss that help recover the writer’s inner sense of being at home.
