Abstract

This public lecture at Portsmouth Cathedral in a series on 'Values in Society' considers the way in which Churches can contribute to public bioethics. It suggests that they need to engage with public reasoning rather than assert positions in emotive terms. It then examines the implications of changes to the architecture of bioethics governance following the 'Bonfire of the Quangos'. It identifies options for the future, including the retreat of public bioethics from some areas, the privatisation of 'public ethics' through the 'big society' and an increased role for Parliamentary oversight.
