Abstract
This chapter draws on the author's experience as Chair of the Human Genetics Commission from 2009 to 2012, and reflects on factors affecting the selection of regulatory options by the Commission. The Commission did not directly wield legal power, but it had a recognized place in UK bioethical governance. It was established in 2000 to advise the UK government on the ethical, legal, and social issues arising from human genetics; it was disbanded in 2012 as part of the reconfiguration of non-governmental bodies. Examples are presented to illustrate how the Commission weighed the opportunities for both short and longer term intervention and also a range of regulatory options. Among the Commission's regulatory successes was the instigation of legal interventions for the crime of DNA theft under the Human Tissue Act 2004.
