(I) C19HIaN2 (5-n-butyl-6H-pyrido[4,3- b]carbazole), Mr= 274.37, P2Jc, a = 5.023 (3), b = 17.848 (5), c= 16.454 (5)A, fl=93.67 (2) ° , V= 1472.1 (11) /~3, Z = 4, D m = 1.24, D x = 1.238 Mg m -3, 2(Cu Ka) = 1.54178 A,/t = 0.528 mm -1, F(000)= 584, R =0.068 for 815 unique significant reflections measured at 298 K. (II) C18H16N20 (5,11- dimethyl-9-methoxy-6H-pyrido[4,3-b]carbazole), Mr= 276.34, P2~/c, a=6.508(1), b=24.281(8), c= 8.938 (2) A, fl= 98.46 (2) °, V= 1397.0 (10) A3, Z= 4, D m=1.33, D x= l.314 Mgm -3, 2(CuKt~)= 1.54178 A, g = 0.616 mm -~, F(000) = 584, R = 0.052 for 1736 unique significant reflections measured at 298 K. The dimensions of the ring systems in the two compounds are similar to one another and to those found in ellipticine itself [Courseille, Busetta & Hospital (1974). Acta Cryst. B30, 2628-2631].
