Abstract
Pluronic Lecithin Organogel (PLO), which is not really an organogel (defined as a gel where the liquid component is organic, rather than aqueous), is currently generating great interest as a transdermal delivery vehicle in the United States of America. A large number of drugs have been incorporated within PLO, for human and animal use, American compounding pharmacists advertise PLO and their compounding services and PLO is commercially available from at least three different manufacturers. The interest in PLO is mostly a result of anecdotal evidence and to date, systematic scientific evidence for its efficacy is limited. In this article, Pluronic Lecithin Organogel is reviewed and the available literature on this formulation is assessed. This review is aimed at hospital pharmacists, dermatologists and anaesthetists, among other clinicians.
