Abstract

Continuum models of phonon spectra of small crystals fail for wavelengths of the order of the crystal dimensions. Spin lattice relaxation rates, calculated here, may differ considerably from infinite crystal values, and are strongly field dependent. Advantages of using small crystals for the system MgO:Co2+ are discussed.
