Abstract

This work is a case study of Hegel’s Science of Logic. Firstly, it presents a new interpretation of Hegel’s identification of logic and metaphysics in light of how both disciplines have a self-referential character when they or their entities become in need of philosophical critique and proof. Hence, I argue the Logic is concerned with advancing a metaphysical category with a proof of self-demonstrative nature, or a category such that its logical articulation is necessarily its ontological instantiation. Such a category is necessary to overcome the self-referential issues blocking the successful philosophical critique of metaphysics and logic. Contrary to extant interpretations, I claim this category is becoming, not pure being, and thus this new interpretation of becoming authenticates the project of Hegel’s presuppositionless logic as ontology. In the last section I defend my reading and develop what it means for the Logic, culminating in a general framework by which self-certifying proofs of logical structures can be constructed.
