Abstract

The Robotic Performances: Human–Material–Machine Choreographies in Domestic Space exhibition, designed by Valentina Soana (UCL CS and BSA) with support from Georgia Kolokoudia (UCL BSA), Emmanouil Dimitrakakis, and Harvey Stedman (UCL Robotics, UCL CS), is part of the public programme takeover events of House Block, developed by the Bartlett School of Architecture’s Automated Architecture (AUAR) Labs in collaboration with Hackney Council. The exhibition showcases research from the Department of Computer Science (CS) and the Bartlett School of Architecture (BSA) at University College London (UCL). It highlights UCL CS/BSA research led by Valentina Soana on Lightweight Elastic Robotic Architecture, presented alongside selected projects from the MArch AD RC2 B-Pro programme and the MSc AC Studio. For decades, designers have envisioned building systems capable of responding and adapting to human, environmental, and structural conditions. Recent advancements in robotics now enable machines to be self-aware, to plan, and even to react to unknown circumstances. Integrating robotic solutions into material systems opens up the possibility of creating structures that can self-form, reconfigure, and operate across multiple states—interacting at both architectural and human scales. The emerging design potential of lightweight elastic robotic structures lies at the core of Valentina Soana’s research. Her work investigates their role in architecture beyond fabrication and construction, moving toward concepts of “architectural robots” and “robotic spaces.” This robotic performance presents a selection of interactive robotic material structures developed by researchers and students working at the intersection of architecture and engineering at the Bartlett School of Architecture and UCL Robotics/Computer Science at University College London. The exhibition includes the work of MArch AD RC2 2020/21 students Yichao Shi, Tongyao Lin, Yiting Ma, Ling Dai, Shahram Sabery, Chepas Bhaskar, Yelay Bayraktaroglu, Xin Tong, Huan Zhang, and Jiatong Ni, and MSc AC Studio 2 students Giuseppe Bono and Cailin Craiu.
