Abstract

The construction industry has responded to the increasing demand for precast concrete structures by placing greater emphasis on joint connections to enhance reliability and construction efficiency. An innovative connection method for precast concrete components using U-shaped steel wire rope (USWR) and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has been proposed. In this joint system, fibres in UHPC inhibit microcrack initiation and propagation, while the embedded steel wire ropes improve bond behaviour with the matrix. This paper presents an experimental and theoretical study on bond and anchorage behaviour of straight steel wire rope (SSWR) and USWR in UHPC. A series of pull-out tests accounting for the effects nominal diameter and anchorage length of steel wire ropes were conducted, followed by theoretical analysis and predictions of bond strength of SSWR in UHPC and peak load of USWR in UHPC. Results indicate that the typical pull-out failure and steel wire rope fracture occur in UHPC with SSWR, while the main failure modes for UHPC with USWR are steel wire rope fracture and UHPC cone failure. The critical anchorage length of SSWR in UHPC can be regarded as 8d. Compared with SSWR, the critical anchorage length of USWR in UHPC is approximately 28.6 % shorter, owing to the beneficial effect of its arc segments. The proposed theoretical model accurately predicts the peak load of USWR with UHPC cone failure, thereby facilitating the engineering application of this connection method in precast concrete structures.
