Abstract

Language learning and intercultural communication (IC) are intrinsically interconnected and offer a socially grounded approach to teaching and learning. The chapter explores how IC can be meaningfully integrated into language classrooms and how contemporary approaches foster intercultural communicative competence (ICC) across cognitive, linguistic and affective dimensions of learning. It traces the evolution of IC theory from early its anthropological roots to critical inclusive frameworks. While traditional transmissive models often limit engagement with culture, newer approaches—such as translanguaging, curriculum design centred on authentic intercultural tasks and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)—address these gaps. By promoting mediation, reflection, and collaborative meaning making, such approaches cultivate empathy, adaptability and ICC. The chapter argues that ICC as a central goal of language education in a diverse, interconnected world.
