Abstract

Educators experience varying emotions which impact upon job-satisfaction, and teaching practice. Despite this, there is a lack of research focused on engineering educators′ emotions, particularly from a sociological perspective. This work takes a poststructuralist approach to understanding how engineering educators experience emotion in relation to topics they teach and how they engage in emotional labour to manage these emotions. Data collected from fourteen semi-structured interviews with engineering educators were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, with the concept of ‘emotional geographies’ used as an analytical lens. Educators’ topic emotions were found to depend upon factors including colleague and student perceptions, as well as control and autonomy over teaching. Participants typically negotiated emotional labour by drawing upon professional and moral values and competencies, for example, by attending to student needs. Emotions were internalised and viewed as an individual problem, something which is likely to impact wellbeing, as well as teaching quality.
