Abstract

Die frühe transatlantische Goethe-Rezeption gilt als eine etwas bruchstückhafte Geschichte, da der amerikanische Buchmarkt bis in die 1830er Jahre weitgehend von Großbritannien abhängig war. Eine Analyse der amerikanischen Rezeption des „Werther“, William Taylors „Historic Survey of German Poetry“ (1828–1830) und der multimedialen Übertragung des „Faust“ verdeutlicht die Austauschnetzwerke zwischen Buchhändlern, Verlegern und Übersetzern, die den Boden für ein Goethe-Bild bereiteten, das sich erst mit dem Transzendentalismus stärker formalisierte. // The early transatlantic reception of Goethe is a somewhat fractured narrative, as America was primarily dependent on Britain for supplies of books, reviews, and translations until the 1830s. Examining the American reception of “Werther”, William Taylor’s “Historic Survey of German Poetry” (1828–1830), and the multimedia transfer of “Faust” elucidates the networks of exchange between booksellers, publishers, and translators that prepared the ground for an image of Goethe that became more formalised with the emergence of Transcendentalism.
