Abstract

The Coin Hoards of the Roman Republic database started in 1989 as part of a Master’s dissertation. It was expanded for my PhD, and then again for subsequent publications, especially my book in 2007. The database was a personal research database and hoards which fulfilled my research objectives were targeted at this stage. In 2009, I was approached by the late Rick Witschonke with a view to making the data available via the American Numismatic Society’s website. I was initially reticent, as the data had not been collected with a view to being a resource database. This paper reviews how the original database came about, how the online database has been received, and outlines the development of the database since 2013. It concludes with some comments on how numismatic practice in relation to hoard publications could be improved.
