Abstract

The challenges facing coastal communities have attracted national attention and funding, but the experiences and needs of young people aged 15-20 are often overlooked in these discussions. The report begins to address some of the gaps, by reporting the views and experiences of 50 policymakers and youth practitioners around England, including teachers, youth workers, housing officers, local government officials and local councillors. This report outlines the challenges that coastal youth face and highlights how young people are affected by the limited education, employment and leisure opportunities that are available in coastal communities. The report also sets out 5 recommendations for change that local policymakers and youth practitioners would like to see. This report is part of the UCL Coastal Youth Life Chances project.
