Abstract

The papers in this special issue of Public Archaeology are dedicated to the memory of Tim Schadla-Hall (1947–2023), our Editor-in-Chief of many years. Like many things built of grief this volume is imperfect and behind schedule, and it falls short — naturally and inevitably — of doing justice to an extraordinary life. It is not intended as an obituary, nor as just a tribute to Tim the teacher, supervisor, colleague, friend, and mentor — although two of the shorter papers presented here, by Cole and Gould, are personal memoirs of Tim. For a straightforward and fair account of Tim’s life and work, I recommend the obituary written by Hedley Swain in the Museums Journal (Swain, Citation2023). Many others have written personal memories and stories. A memorial was held at UCL in April 2023: I was one of six of Tim’s colleagues and friends who spoke at the event, and these talks have been collected into an article (D’Arcy, et al., Citation2023). Between these varied accounts it is possible for somebody who did not know Tim to gain an appreciation of him: generous, troubled, passionate, and enthusiastically entangled in networks of people, places, landscapes, and things.
