Abstract

Bangladesh, known as East Pakistan from 1947–1971, was looking for a unique identity for its architecture and urbanism as it was just emerging from the two-century-long British legacy. The region’s architectural sector was essentially non-existent. The Pakistani government engaged contemporary national and international architects to fill the void. The result of their two-decade-long research and work was an architectural style that was global in nature but deeply rooted in the local context: a tropical architecture for the region that was climate responsive. The study explores the stylistic references in the architecture of the time and how they were influenced by the problems and opportunities posed by the local climate. Through systematic case studies of selected architectural projects from the time with research tools such as archival research and systematic analysis of drawings, volumes and photographs, the study examines the newly discovered postcolonial architectural identity of the Pakistan era.
