Abstract
The study of hoards is one of the mainstays of numismatics. Hoards allow us to examine patterns of production, supply and circulation. They have, however, largely been studied as static entities with attempts to categorise them in a simple way, e.g., emergency, savings and purse hoards. This paper describes how we might use the metaphor of ‘life’ to move away from studying hoards as static entities and proposes a vocabulary to facilitate that approach. It argues that by thinking of the processes that lie behind our hoards in this systematic way, we might develop more nuanced interpretations of our data.
