Abstract

Industrial CNC knitting machines are renowned for their ability to produce intricate, customizable structures. However, their complexity and technical demands limit accessibility. The paper addresses this challenge by exploring the use of Kniterate, a user-friendly medium-sized CNC knitting machine that seeks to enhance accessibility for designers and architects. This is achieved by developing a Grasshopper plug-in 'Kniteretta,' which bridges compatibility between Kniterate's software and design programs. The plug-in converts bitmap images into machine-readable text files, making the design process less reliant on specialized knitting software. The paper illustrates the workflow's validity through the production of knitted samples and a medium-scale design prototype. Additionally, it explores the potential for automating variable transfers to further enhance design flexibility. The overarching aim is to use such tools to improve accessibility and encourage innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
