Abstract
This paper is an attempt to reckon with the instances of hiatus found in two of Plato’s works, the Timaeus and Critias. First, hiatus will be defined, in line with Devine and Stephens’ study of the proununciation of ancient Greek, Greek Prosody (Oxford, 1994). Then various classes of apparent hiatus will be discussed: some were unavoidable (e. g. no arrangement of Plato’s chosen words could avoid hiatus) or intentionally for effect. I examine a class of exceptions called “the chain of concordant words.”
