Abstract
Grounded Energy Modelling for Equitable Urban Development in the Global South project (GEMDev) The aim of the research project is to contribute to inclusive decisionmaking for dignified housing and habitat. GEMDev focuses on the nexus between energy, thermal comfort and housing to understand the housing and energy challenges of off-grid and partially off-grid communities as well as develop tools for better planning. Such communities have limited or precarious energy access and lack adequate housing. This has profound effects on health, wellbeing and economic opportunities. The project seeks to learn from three off-grid settlements in LimaPeru and three cases of in-situ slum redevelopment in AhmedabadIndia. It analyses thermal comfort and inhabitants’ energy practices to understand how they interact with different policies, and how they change over time in relation to different housing processes for the urban poor, such as auto-construction or government-led slum redevelopment. This report focuses more specifically on the lessons from Lima and is informed by one strand of the project which aims to understand the interaction between: housing typology and inhabitant’s thermal comfort; energy practices; risks related to energy access and use; and inhabitants’ capacity to act to reduce energy poverty and vulnerability.
