Abstract
Arthur Swayne Underwood (1854-1916) was an exceptional dental surgeon and odontonlogist. His contribution to dental education and research is largely forgotten, but he published important papers on dental caries and enamel structure and no less than five textbooks over twentytwo years, some running to several editions. Many of his family, dental friends and age-mates were, like him, of a broad artistic and creative inclination. This was as important to him as the joy of discovering new things through his research. He was influential in establishing the early dental curriculum in UK universities and in promoting dental research alongside improvements in clinical dental surgery.
