Abstract
Primary care services are the first point of contact in the National Health System (NHS) for people needing healthcare in the UK. England and Wales have approximately 7,500 primary healthcare sites, most requiring energy-efficiency refurbishments to achieve the NHS Net-Zero target by 2040. However, the specific measures for improving the energy efficiency of primary healthcare building stock remain unclear. This study develops an approach to extracting energy-related characteristics and creating dynamic simulation models from energy certificate models – Simplified Building Energy Models (SBEMs) for the NHS primary healthcare building stock. The proposed approach involving creating building specifications database and converting the SBEM models buildings into EnergyPlus models. This streamlined process allows for efficient energy performance analysis at scale using Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) input data. The building specifications database provides key insights into the thermal and energy properties of primary healthcare buildings across England and Wales. Simulation results reveal great potential for energy-saving and decarbonization for primary healthcare buildings across England and Wales, especially through the lighting and heating system upgrades, along with the onsite PV installation. This study undertakes a large-scale analysis of refurbishment measures, aiding in policy planning and implementation to decarbonize healthcare facilities. The methodology is scalable and can be applied to various building types across different countries in Europe and support broader decarbonization efforts. Integrating both active and passive refurbishment measures can synergistically enhance their effectiveness, accelerating the achievement of net-zero target.
