Abstract
Optogenetics and chemogenetics have become essential techniques in systems neuroscience. The development of these tools has massively benefited our understanding of the neuronal circuits involved in spatial navigation. In particular, they have been crucial in untangling the local network involved in the emergence of spatially selective cells and have played a major role in elucidating how brain areas involved in spatial navigation communicate and coordinate their activities. In this article, we focus on the hippocampo-entorhinal network, highlighting the opportunities offered by these tools while also acknowledging their potential caveats.
