Abstract

Underwater cyclindrical shells are widely used for submarines or torpedos. Their structures are often strengthened with double skins with complicated shapes of support members. While in service, the structures can be acoustically vibrated leading to functional failures of sensitive equipment. It is essential to control and manage such vibrations to secure the functionality and integrity of the system. The aim of the present paper is to develop an analytical method to solve the problem of acoustic vibrations for underwater double-skinned cylindrical shells with arbitrary elastic connections along the boundaries. For this purpose, spring models to capture translational and rotational movements associated with arbitrary shapes of boundaries are built, and elastically restrained connections between ouer and inner skins are modelled with a spring and mass concept. Flügge shell theory is utilized to solve the acoustic wave problem together with improved Fourier series and model expansion approaches. The proposed method is validated in terms of natural frequency and mean square vibration velocity by comaprsion with physical test and FEA results available in the literature. A parametric study with varying the stiffness of elastically restrained boundary connections is also made using the proposed method. It is found that acoustic vibration is mainly transmitted by main channel when the stiffness of the connections between outer and inner skins is small, but the connections become a main player of vibration transmission with increase in their stiffness.
