Abstract
This contribution looks at the history of an eighteenth-century Ethiopian processional cross that was taken by a British soldier, Captain Arbuthnot, during the siege of Magdala. In addition to an English inscription that celebrates the circumstances during which it was plundered, the cross is also decorated with representations of the Crucifixion and the Archangel Michael identified by inscriptions in Ethiopic. The cross eventually came to be in the possession of the late Emmanuel Abraham, who worked in the Ethiopian Embassy in London between the 1930s and 1950s, and was given to the Ethiopian Heritage Authority by his daughter Ruth Abraham in 2023.
