Abstract
Identities play a prominent role in many current discussions regarding nationality, gender, ethnicity, and religion. There is little doubt that identities are important for the ways in which people act and lead their lives. Identities certainly seem to have normative significance. I explore in this chapter why and when identities provide reasons for those who are the bearers of an identity, as well as for others in their actions towards them. I will focus on Sartre’s well-known comments on bad faith as a way of explaining worries about reasons from identity and as an objection that any account of such reasons must address.
