Abstract

My presentation stretches from my background in the study of Classics to the last two decades as a teacher and researcher in the growing field of digital humanities. It draws on established examples of digital platforms used by both students and researchers alike to support and extend the study of the ancient world. This presentation considers a variety of approaches for using digital platforms and asks what difference using digital methodologies and workflows makes to the research process. In addition, it discusses examples of cooperation and collaboration on large scale classics and literature projects as well as highlighting challenges and obstacles to possible collaboration. In addition, there is reflection on the move to digital and how we might ensure best practice, particularly in regard to Open Linked Data and FAIR principles. Publishing our data openly and freely allows for greater use and reuse. Mutual learning and collaboration will lead to a deeper understanding, not only about others but also about ourselves. We must build bridges to reach out beyond our own cultures though education, communication, and cooperation, to share knowledge and learning, to overcome cultural barriers and other obstacles, to achieve harmony between civilizations and greater prosperity for humanity.
