Abstract

Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845-1886) infamously spent inordinate amounts of money to sponsor the arts, leaving the Bavarian state on the verge of bankruptcy. Ludwig’s place in the history of Germany, Western music and architecture is well known, yet his relation to the gothic tradition has eluded scholarly criticism. My aim is to formulate a filmic and historical reading of Ludwig II as a key romantic gothic figure. To this effect, I integrate into my approach two distinct dimensions-the real person and the aestheticised legend-which, when combined, allow for a better understanding of Ludwig’s gothicisation in popular culture. My work offers an innovative, if sometimes problematic, encounter between historical events, private accounts and filmic depictions. This methodological strategy provides a more complete picture of Ludwig’s Gothicism and suits his liminal status, initially acquired and cultivated during his lifetime and later mythologised.
