Abstract
This thesis examines the practices of six Chinese users on Douyin within the context of the convergence of technologies and emerging social networking platforms. Through a detailed examination of the interplay between text, practice, and context, these engagement trajectories reveal the underlying scaffolding of literacy development. This thesis seeks to understand how users negotiate their literacy practices in the new media ecology and what impact this has on their engagement with new media. It ultimately questions the changing role of literacy in the digital age and how this affects the way we interact with media. Douyin users intricately weave diverse practices into coherent engagement journeys as they navigate the platform's features and resources. Assorted practices can establish a collective framework that structures activities and contextual affordances, guided by a specific orientation, such as recording daily life or presenting hobbies. The act of structuring the trajectory showcases users' adeptness at assimilating and applying media literacy across a spectrum of practices. Projecting these two pivotal anchors onto the learning framework underscores the significance of user authorship and media literacy adaptation in reconciling practices with learning outcomes. Engagement and learning are integrated into a continuum where literacy is emphasised.
