Abstract

In the last few decades, increasing research efforts have been devoted to the definition of innovative seismic resilient technologies and design strategies with the aim of reducing both direct and indirect losses and hence minimising the impact of such extreme events on the society. In this context, the use of Friction Devices (FDs) within the Beam-to-Column joints (BCJs) of steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs) has emerged as an effective solution to limit the local damage simultaneously benefitting from their energy dissipation capacity. Additionally, more recent studies have revealed the benefits of using Self-Centring Column Bases (SC-CBs) for the residual drift reduction of steel MRFs. These and other research studies in this field aimed at the definition of structural solutions that could be easily repaired after an extreme event, hence promoting functional recovery. However, experimental research on suitable structural repair techniques is still marginal and the lack of confidence in the performance of repaired structures are relevant issues contributing to the high demolition rates. The present paper illustrates the results of an experimental campaign conducted on a large-scale steel structure equipped with BCJs with FDs and SC-CBs. Several pseudodynamic tests were performed and, at the end of each test, the structure was repaired by loosening and retightening the bolts of the FDs to investigate the residual drift reduction during repair and successively evaluate the effectiveness of the repair operations. Furthermore, an advanced numerical model was developed in OPENSEES and then validated against experimental results. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the repairing method as well as the ability of the numerical model in simulating the repairing process.
