Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing concern about children’s sleep, in particular that their sleep quantity and quality are not optimal. Children’s sleep is associated with their cognitive functioning, specifically their memory function and sustained attention. Cross-cultural studies that employed a cross-country comparison approach found that sleep duration and the prevalence of sleep disturbances of Typically Developing (TD) children varied across countries. Autistic children have been reported to experience a greater number of sleep disturbances than their TD peers. However, only a few studies to date have investigated cultural differences in sleep problems of autistic children. Furthermore, limited studies have examined cultural variations in factors associated with inadequate sleep quantity and quality of children across countries, and it is still unknown if there are cultural variations in the role of sleep on cognitive functioning of children across countries. Thus, this thesis provides a novel contribution to the field of sleep health and developmental psychology by investigating sleep duration, sleep disturbances and developmental changes in sleep. Moreover, factors contributing to inadequate sleep in children by implementing a cross-country comparison approach, comparing the United Kingdom (hereafter UK) and South Korea (hereafter Korea) are discussed. These studies consider comparisons between autistic children and their TD peers. This thesis also contributes to cognitive psychology by integrating a cross-country comparison approach to compare memory and sustained attention, as well as the relationship between sleep and memory and sustained attention in TD and autistic children between two countries.
