Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of Human Digital Twins (HDTs) in healthcare of seafarers. With the modernization of the maritime industry, the introduction of digital healthcare engineering within the operational and medical elements of seafarer life as well as healthcare of aging ships and offshore installations is becoming increasingly necessary. HDTs provide a platform for healthcare professionals to interact with and monitor the health of seafarers remotely, providing them with advanced medical services, predictive diagnostics and real-time analysis. Through the use of HDTs, seafarers will be able to track their own health and wellbeing, and be provided with detailed medical advice and support. This paper will explore the potential of HDTs and the healthcare benefits they offer to seafarers. It will discuss the role of modern digital and communication technologies in providing in-situ health monitoring (by sensors), data transmission (via WiFi or close-orbit satellite), advanced medical services (by AI with machine learning) and predictive diagnostics, as well as the need for more effective healthcare systems for seafarers. Additionally, this paper will assess the challenges of implementing HDTs within the maritime industry, and how these can be overcome. Finally, it will review the implications of HDTs for the health and wellbeing of seafarers, as well as the economic benefits of their use. By providing and insights into the potential of HDTs for healthcare of seafarers, this paper will help to inform the development of new technologies and systems that can be used to ensure the health and wellbeing of seafarers.
