Abstract
Although in 21st century UK films working-class characters still occupy a central place, they are increasingly juxtaposed with ‘others’ of similarly precarious social status—e.g., migrant workers and asylum seekers—with classic themes like the demise of the traditional working class and changing gender roles now supplanted by thematic concerns about globalization, exploitation, slavery, otherness and exile. What can UK films made during the second and third stage of neoliberalism tell us about the working class, especially in the context of the critical re-evaluation of the British New Wave and social realist films made during the Thatcher era, both important predecessors to ‘the new European cinema of precarity’?
