Abstract

While the new European cinema of precarity inscribes itself within a long-standing European tradition of socially conscious cinema, it is important to attend to the ways in which these films differ from their forerunners. The new European cinema of precarity is distinguished by a wide range of genre and stylistic responses to the precarity of life under neoliberalism, from allegorical (White God, Happy as Lazzaro, Transit), through experimental (Bait), from black comedies (Glory, My Piece of the Pie) to social dramas (La loi du marche, At War), from work musicals (The Nothing Factory) to corporate psycho-thrillers, suggesting that traditional forms of social realism are no longer sufficient to capture the complexity of Europe’s socio-political and moral crisis.
