Abstract
In this chapter, we explore published literature centred on using LEGO to learn coding, to learn music, but also work at the intersection of construction, coding/electronics and music. Following the rehearsal of the evidence-base, we share experiences and present findings from a short-scale, exploratory funded case-study with participatory research components, where pupils in an English secondary school participated in creative exploration of instrument making, collaborative project management, musical performance, and rehearsal of instrument making principles within both the acoustic and digital domains. We emphasise the benefits of gradual and gentle introduction of the student participants to principles of instrument making, facilitated by the creation of ‘simple’ instruments, and critical reflective assessment of the challenges and caveats of undertaking the construction of somewhat more complex instruments.
