Abstract
Acknowledging ‘ordinary’ and ‘everyday’ heritages raises important questions about what heritage is, where it is to be found, to whom it belongs and how it is practised. This chapter presents research that deploys the concepts and methods of space syntax ‘archaeologically’ to focus on the role of spatial morphology in mediating the relationship of the present and past in different localities for a better understanding of historic urban landscapes. Configurational analysis of the street networks of six suburban developments built on the estates of country houses demolished in the 20th century suggests how historical patterns of space were not necessarily erased by development but could be preserved within larger-scale structures of urban space. The research explores the extent to which residential areas built on the sites of demolished country houses preserve spatial morphological signatures of their historic uses and whether this helps explain their contemporary identity as local places.
