Abstract

The work reported here is part of a larger study which aims to explore how the community cultural wealth of BME pupils may advance or restrict their aspirations in science. Although there is current literature regarding science capital per se, there is not a corresponding analysis of the experiences of BME pupils, especially those from African and African Caribbean backgrounds.By focussing on schools with high BME populations we aim to capture the talents, strengths and experiences that BME students bring with them to their school environment. Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth framework provides a lens through which to investigate the specificity of BME pupils’ experience, in contexts where traditional and combined science curriculum are taught and crucially whether these forms of capital are integrated within or operate outside of science capital.
