Abstract
"On his deathbed in Mexico City, a free-born mulato named Francisco Carreño carefully assembled paperwork that documented his complex negotiations with slavery and freedom throughout his life in late sixteenth-century New Spain (present-day Mexico).¹ Compiling his final will and testament in 1603, Carreño sought to assure the free status of his mulato son, Juan Carreño. The elder Carreño outlined how he had liberated an unnamed Black woman from slavery by paying the price of her liberty to her former owner because she was the mother of Carreño’s only son and heir, Juan Carreño.
