Abstract

This thesis is about the study of the sleep profiles of individuals with non-malignant chronic pain. It covers a research journey from 2019 to 2022, including a literature review, five research studies, and a discussion chapter. The literature review covers the classification of chronic pain, sleep physiology, common sleep disorders, their impact on health, and the relationship between chronic pain and sleep problems. The first study explores the impact of sleep quality on the relationship between pain and depression-related states, while the second study examines the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown measures on sleep, pain, and well-being among adults with chronic pain. The third study explores the sleep profiles of adults with non-malignant chronic pain and pain management strategies, while the fourth study examines the acceptability and feasibility of a consumer-grade EEG headband called ‘Dreem 2©’. The final study explores the feasibility of a six-session behavioural intervention to improve sleep scores in adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Finally, a discussion chapter highlights the key findings from my original research and their implications for future research, clinical practice, policymakers, and industry. Overall, the thesis highlights the importance of sleep outcomes in the management of chronic pain and the opportunities for improving the monitoring and treatment of sleep through digital health products and behavioural interventions.
