Abstract
It is difficult to avoid the fashionable preoccupation with counterfactuals, where alternative universes drive plot lines. Yet, even though the question “what if” may expose the all-too-common trap of determinism, most historians rightly stick to the facts as they are known. Their challenge is in identifying relevant facts and weighing up their significance. For Mira Siegelberg, the facts behind her study of statelessness include the ideas presented by a coterie of scholastic heroes who came to define the international legal system we inherited.
